4 Home Remedies To Make a Dull BathTub Shine

For many, the bathtub is one of the most frequently used items in the sanitary area, which requires a lot of maintenance. Dust, dirt in the bathwater and organic residues ensure that the baths become dull over time, which can usually not be remedied by a normal cleaning agent. Fortunately, there are various ways to make the coating shine again.

Agents for cleaning bathtub

The use of suitable agents is important when cleaning bathtub coatings. Since the coatings are made from a variety of different materials such as acrylic, you need to be careful not to scratch them. For this reason, various things are used that do not aggravate the condition of the bathtub coating. The following list gives you an overview of these:

  • Microfiber cloths
  • Soft sponges
  • Cleaning gloves
  • Optional: soft brush or toothbrush

The use of these facilitates the use of home remedies and protects the coatings from further damage. The cleaning gloves are recommended because some of the agents presented could react irritating to sensitive skin.

Dull coating: 4 home remedies

Once your bathtub is dull, you don’t need to contact a professional immediately or apply a completely new coating. The deposits themselves have a weakness on certain agents, which makes their use and thus the cleaning of the tub possible. There are 5 home remedies and products that you can use for this purpose. However, these can only be used if the bathtub is not damaged. Scratches, lacquer bumps or dents should be repaired beforehand, or the entire bathtub coating replaced.

Buttermilk

Buttermilk is ideal for cleaning bathtubs that are only slightly dull. The milk is not as strong as the other home remedies, but is sufficient in most cases if the deposits are not too dense. Only one cup of buttermilk is required for the application, regardless of the fat content. It is used in the following ways:

  • Pour buttermilk into the bathtub
  • Spread well with a sponge
  • Rub on the dull areas with a brush
  • Leave on for 30 to 60 minutes (depending on the degree of soiling)
  • Then drain the buttermilk
  • Rinse well with cold water
  • Dry

You can also clean the fittings with the buttermilk. Be careful not to leave the buttermilk in the bathtub for more than 60 minutes. Since it is an animal product, it may become worse with longer exposure times, which has a negative effect on cleaning performance.

Washing powder

Often overlooked, but extremely effective is the use of washing powder for dull bathtubs. The ingredients of detergents work extremely well against all kinds of deposits that lead to a dull coating. It doesn’t matter which washing powder you use. It is used in the following ways:

  • Pour washing powder dry into the bathtub
  • Moisten the sponge or microfiber cloth
  • Rub washing powder into the coating
  • Rub until the dirt dissolves
  • Leave on for a maximum of 60 minutes
  • Rinse well
  • Dry the tub

If the first run is not enough, be sure to use the washing powder again. Repeat this process until the coatings shine again. Depending on the degree of contamination, this may take a little.

Rinse aid

As an alternative to the detergent, you can use rinse aid. A big advantage of the rinse aid is the ease of use since it is used in the same way as the washing powder. In order to be able to apply the rinse aid to the coating, you just have to put the stopper in the drain beforehand so that the liquid does not drain off immediately. Simply distribute this thoroughly in the tub and let it act for a maximum of one hour. Then rinse and dry as usual.

Polishing paste

If you do not want to use a classic home remedy, the polishing paste is ideal. Polishing paste ensures that only slightly soiled but dull bathtubs look nice and are clean again. You can also use car polish as an alternative to polishing paste. A great advantage of the polishing agent is the filling of the smallest scratches, which protects against deposits. It is applied thinly to a damp cloth and rubbed into the tub. Press a little on deposits. Then the paste is rinsed with pure water and dried. After the treatment, the tub can be a little slippery.
